FAQ

General Construction Cleaning Questions

Q: What’s the difference between a regular housecleaning service and a construction cleaning service?

A: At Five Star Construction, we have over 25 years of experience specializing in construction and post-renovation cleaning, serving both residential and commercial properties throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. While regular housekeeping services pertain to your daily housekeeping routine in your home or business, construction cleaning is a niche service that focuses specifically on post-construction clean-up, encompassing a full scope of specialty services, including:

Q: Is it necessary to have our home or place of business cleaned twice – in other words, directly after renovation and once again after our furnishings are moved back in?
A: Due to our proprietary cleaning techniques, years of experience and specialized services, no – our team of experts will provide a deep and thorough clean, detailing your commercial space or residential dwelling to a pristine state and returning it to its original condition the very first time. We realize as busy New Yorkers, your time is valuable, and we stand behind all of our services, offering efficient and cost-effective construction cleaning regimes you can count on. We also provide green cleaning solutions (upon request and where applicable) for allergy sufferers, children, pets or anyone who requires eco-friendly cleaning alternatives.
Q: Do you move furniture during commercial and residential cleanings?
A: Whether you require a post-reno clean-up for your home or business, our regular pricing includes moving most light furniture items (such as chairs, tables, couches, shelving etc.). Heavier pieces such as dressers, beds, china cabinets and similar items are left in place under our initial pricing structure; however, they can be moved upon request and may require an additional upcharge. We recommend removing all valuables, electronic devices, and fragile items (such as decorations, small accessories, mirrors, paintings, glasswear and other items that may break) and packing them away in a safe place before any construction cleaning commences.
Q: Is your company insured against damages?

A: At Five Star, we understand that renovations can be a stressful time – whether you’re undergoing construction in your home or overhauling your commercial space, we realize there are a lot of different elements to coordinate to ensure your renovation goes as seamlessly as possible. That’s why each of our trained staff is licensed, bonded and fully insured, providing you with the highest attention to detail and respect for your valuables. In the event that an object or furnishing is accidentally damaged, please notify our office within 24 hours so we may rectify the issue. We also recommend putting fragile or breakable objects in storage or packed away in a safe place before heavy construction has begun.

Q: What type of training does your team receive?

A: Our staff of experts is comprised of specialists who are at the top of their field – from our Construction Cleaning Consultants to our HVAC/IAQ Specialists, each of our employees must have considerable professional experience in their area of expertise prior to employment with Five Star. In addition to being licensed, bonded and insured, we are also OSHA certified.  As one of New York’s leading construction cleaning companies, we pride ourselves on our efficiency, courtesy and level of professionalism that has served the city for over three decades.

HVAC & IAQ Questions

Q: Is post-renovation dust and debris dangerous to the respiratory system?

A: Just because something looks clean on the surface does not guarantee that the air we are breathing has been scrubbed of harmful dust and airborne particulates. In the event of residential or commercial construction, one of the most essential components of post-renovation clean-up is a thorough analysis of your air quality. At Five Star, our IAQ experts will develop a customized cleaning routine to address any and all factors that can cause potential health hazards in your dwelling (including dust, allergens, mold, mildew, and airborne debris) that can lead to chronic respiratory ailments, allergies, asthma, sinus infections and other serious health conditions. Based on our expertise and three decades of experience, you can breathe easier knowing that you are protecting the inhabitants of your home or office with our scope of OSHA-certified IAQ services and HVAC specialties.

Q: What can I do to ensure lasting clean air after my initial IAQ maintenance?

A: There are a number of ways you can continue to maintain air quality levels in your home or office after an initial post-renovation cleaning that includes IAQ/HVAC services. For starters, we recommend maintaining proper space temperature and humidity levels for optimal air quality. However, the best way to keep your air quality consistent is through routine IAQ maintenance, including HVAC servicing and having your air vents and registers cleaned and restored on a regular basis. In addition, speak with one of our HVAC/IAQ Specialists to learn more about customized IAQ solutions that can further enhance your building’s air quality, including bi-polar ionization systems, enhanced filtration and other specialized strategies to maintain your environment.

Q: How do I know when it’s time to schedule a duct cleaning?

A: There are a number of things to be taken into consideration when figuring out when to schedule a duct cleaning appointment. For starters, in the case of new ductwork, it’s important that they’re cleaned before they’re connected to the air handling system, as they frequently contain oil, dirt and construction debris. For older ductwork, routine maintenance is essential, as they can accumulate a build-up of debris, dust, mold, dirt and other airborne contaminants that can wreak havoc on your respiratory system. Other primary reasons you will want to contact an HVAC Specialist for duct cleaning/replacement include foul odors coming from the ductwork or HVAC system, visible debris that is restricting airflow, permanent water damage (which can lead to dangerous black mold), evidence of slime growth, or physical evidence of dust emissions from your air supply registers.

Carpet & Flooring

Q: How long do you have to wait to walk on freshly-cleaned carpeting?

A: As a general rule of thumb, we recommend avoiding regular traffic on your carpet for at least six hours. In the case of residential carpet cleaning, be sure to keep pets and small children off the carpet; homeowners may use the rugs lightly immediately after cleaning by wearing socks or slippers if absolutely necessary. For commercial areas, be sure to abide by the six-hour rule at the very minimum. In some cases, certain carpets may still feel damp for up to 18 hours prior to cleaning (depending on carpet fiber composition, depth of pile, type of padding, and/or soiling condition). This is normal and will not result in any issues; however, we encourage proper ventilation – opening windows and using floor fans can expedite the drying process. Q: How soon can you walk on a wood floor after a buff & coat service?

A: In most cases, if you’ve received a buff and coat surface on your hardwood floor, we recommend that you wait a minimum of 24 hours after the application of the final coat before walking on the surface. However, for the first 24-48 hours afterwards, be sure to wear socks only (no bare feet or shoes) to ensure you don’t mar or damage the finish during its drying process. As each case may be slightly different (for example, oil vs. water-based finish, as oil-based finishes take longer to dry), be sure to ask your technician exactly how long it will take before it’s safe to return to normal foot traffic on the treated area.

Q: Can you remove pet stains from my wood flooring?

A: At Five Star, we pride ourselves on our expertise when it comes to stain removal – from carpet and wood stains, our highly proficient technicians are capable of cleaning and restoring your floor to like-new condition post-renovation. However, in some instances where there is heavy damage (e.g., wood has turned black from severe water damage or pet urine), we may recommend replacing the affected floor boards and having an expert reweave them in to your existing hardwood floor.

Power Washing & Trash Removal

Q: I have my own pressure washer for my home – do I still need a professional power washing?

A:  In the case of cleaning your own vinyl or brick siding, a pressure washer can remove superficial debris, but it cannot achieve the lasting results of a professional power washing. If you’re washing your siding to remove mildew or mold stains, you will notice that it will most likely return after several months, particularly in the damp warmer months. Our technicians use a cleaning solution that will not only remove the mildew stains, but prevent future build-up while reducing the amount of debris that sticks to your vinyl siding. For residential brick cleaning, pressure washing is also inadequate for removing dirt, debris and mildew, as the porous nature of brick, mortar and stone facades renders them difficult to clean with non-commercial equipment. For best results, we recommend speaking with one of our experts for a free consultation – whether you require algae removal or prevention, bird mess removal, or high-pressure steam cleaning services, we provide one-time and recurring maintenance routines for your residential or commercial property.

Q: Do you provide full property clean-outs?

A: Yes – at Five Star, we offer complete property-clean outs for both residential and commercial dwellings. Whether you’re a landlord, property manager, building superintendent or real estate agent, we provide a complete array of junk removal specialties, including expert hauling services for bulky items, trash/rubble removal for construction sites, removal of yard and property waste, and complete house clean-outs for renovation and remodeling projects. In addition, we provide bins, containers, dumpsters, and other waste management receptacles for your renovation projects – contact us today for additional information to learn how we can assist you.

Attention to Detail is the FIVE STAR DIFFERENCE.
